2023 Picnic and Parade

Hello Members,

What a success the Annual SMLA Picnic was this year! We had 69 in attendance, delicious food, nice prizes, and a great time. Plus, the rain held off with just a brief sprinkle before the drawing for the prizes.

Elections for board members took place and outgoing President Jeff Rogers updated everyone on the past year’s issues existing board members have been working on. Jeff has been our president for five years and his involvement and willingness to lead has been so appreciated (Thank you Jeff). Vice President Linda VanAndel will now be stepping in to fill that roll as she was elected as our new president. Ross Maxwell was elected as vice president. Both of them have been working diligently on the water/flooding issues we have been facing here on Six Mile Lake. Outgoing board member Will Wottowa, (Thank you Will). Will started us down the path of involvement with this issue, you will be missed. Joe Overmeyer was nominated and voted in to replace Will. Congratulations Joe! And a big thank you to Linda and Kathryn Bell for all their work to make the picnic a success!

This year, Roxann Roberts, (her father, Warren Frank, was the first SMLA president) decided to revive the boat parade which has been missing for many years. What fun to see all the decorated boats which lit up the lake and made a fitting ending to a fun day! Thanks to Roxann and all who participated.

We were asked about the loons and what happened to the south loon chicks. We know for sure one of the chicks had been injured but we don’t know how. It came up on shore at our place many times which was very concerning and it would be joined by it’s sibling with the parents offshore. We contacted the loon expert in the U.P. as to what we should do but loons do not ever leave the water except to lay their eggs. Unfortunately, our neighbor witnessed one of the chicks attacked and killed by an eagle and left on the shore. The remaining chick disappeared the next day. The north pair lost one of their chicks early so only one chick will leave Six Mile Lake this year.

Saturday, October 7th is the Chili Supper at the Pleasant Valley Free Methodist Church. Please plan to attend. Sign up to make chili or dessert. Members in attendance vote for their favorites and the winners win a free membership. Last year, there were five winners because we had a tie in each of the categories. I’ll include more information in the next SMLA update.

Last…membership dues are now due. Please send your dues in to Box 421, Central Lake 49622 or sign up on our website.

Thanks to all of our members who make Six Mile Lake the best place to live anywhere!!!
