March 2025 Lake Update

Dear Members,

Happy soon to be Spring!! We hope. We were blasted here with over two hundred inches of snow this winter. And it stuck because temperatures remained frigid. It started before Christmas and just kept coming. Every morning we got up to another blast of snow. As of last week we had three feet of snow on our roofs and we have metal roofs. The semi-melt started a few days ago with a couple days of warm temps but snow banks remain high. What we need now is a very slow thaw. Last November we had about two feet of nice beach showing on our frontage. Not now. The lake is swelling. Six Mile Lake has 68 small tributaries feeding thousands of gallons of water into it. This email is to let our members know to prepare for potential flooding of shorelines. This next week temperatures will soar into the 50’s. With the rapid snow melt and water flow restricted at the culvert in Ellsworth we could have the usual parade of dock sections, rafts, etc escaping into the water and floating to the south end of the lake. Please check or have your neighbors check your frontage. It’s always better to be prepared than not.

Your Six Mile Lake Association board continues to work with other groups along the Chain to address the issues caused by high water events. An inch or two of rain on Intermediate Lake means four to six inches in rise here. It never used to be this way. Right now the culvert in Ellsworth is viewed as the culprit for us but water flow is also restricted in the channels connecting the smaller lakes all the way down the Chain itself. Data continues to be collected all along the Chain by water measuring devices manned by volunteers and the Antrim County dam operator, Leslie Meyers, is looking at all aspects of funding possibilities to address this issue.
