Weevil Planting

Friday, June 18th, 2010

The team from Enroscience planted 12,000  weevils  in the lake Wed. June 16, 2010.   We found a large new patch of the eurasian milfoil on the west side of the lake north of Echo Park. This area and other planted areas are marked with an orange bouy.  Please stay away from these areas as they are areas of large infestation, will get on your boat and the weeds will be carried to other areas. More weevils were planted in two other large existing infestations.  We learned that we have had good results in the areas we planted last year.  Two areas are almost gone and the other two large areas greatly reduced. We hope that the weevil colonies planted last year and this year continue to multiply.   Please learn to site this weed as that is how we can be sure to get weevils planted in the correct areas.  Even with our appartant sucess we realize that this project will continue for at least three more years. Watch for the raffle and be sure to buy your tickets and send in your membership.  Thank you.

I had a problem with moles and ants.  McNaughten Pest Control did a great job in ridding me of the problem at reasonable cost.  Thanks Shawn.  He also got rid of bats at a friend of mine.

2009 Weevil Installation Photo Album

The weevil installation has been completed.  Dave Daniels has provided these great photos of the process.

You will see orange markers on the east side of the lake marking the planting of the weevils. If you see green twist ties on weeds near the surface this is where the weevils were attached to milfoil.
Please help protect these areas and help to notify other boaters and users of the lake.
These  weevils will not bite you or your pets.

We will keep you informed of how things are going.  Thank YOU in advance for your protection of these areas.

The pictures show the planting and markers

Milfiol commitee

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

The milfiol committee just went to a Fresh Water Conference in Traverse City on Oct. 30 part of it was on the milfoil problem.  We received more information to research and have contacted another lake management company that had some ideas for us. Many lakes in Michigan are having this problem and we have heard stories of success with the weevils and using chemicals.

If we use the weevils please be assured that they will not get on  you ,your animals, or infest your lawn.  They do not bite or bother you in any way.  We also learned that if we use chemicals we have to get a signature from every property owner on the lake.  At this time that seems like a impossible task.  We are not leaning toward chemicals.

The company we have been talking with about the weevils has offered us a very nice incentive to make a decision by the end of the year by offering if we submit a signed contract and deposit they will match the amount of the deposit with the equivalent number of extra weevils.  If we make a deposit of 20% they supply an extra 20% weevils, 100% deposit 100% weevils.  With our SMALL budget it is a wonderful option.

We will keep you abreast of more things we find out.  PLEASE DO NOT DELAY IN MAKING YOUR CONTRIBUTION.  We can only make a commitment for the moneys we have and what a great opportunity to double your $$$$.

Please feel free to contact us with ideas or concerns on this project as at times it seems like a overwelming task.   To those of you that have made contributions we thank you very much. We are working at this all the time.  Please remember that this is YOUR LAKE YOUR PROBLEM.  We have a long way to go at getting even 50% of the property owners making contributions.

Milfoil

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

We have had two professionals out to look at the milfiol situation Kevin Cronp, Tipp of the MItt and Mark Breederland from Michigan Sea Grant College program.  They both tell us we are lucky to find the milfiol at this stage so we can get it under control.  We are not in a crisis stage where we would have to chemically treat the whole lake.  They both feel we have a very good shore line for the beatle program to be sucessful.  Many of the lakes in southen MIchigan and Wisconsin that have tried it have had too groomed of a shoreline.  The beatles winter on land and need the brush and growth to survive.  We have not made a dicision as of yet.  We are looking at anything that we can find.

There will be a meeting on MIlfoil on Oct. 30 in Traverse City put on by Mark Breederland and others,  anyone can attend.  The cost is $15.00 and they need you to Rsvp.  We will have more info. on it when the time is closer.

Out biggest issue is $$$$$$$$.  People we HAVE to raise more money.  The raffle was just a start.

  1. Pay your dues, we have lots of members still not paid.  This is time consuming to keep contacting you.

2 . We need YOUR donation of $$$$$$$$. We do not have the funds. We have about 100 members at $25.00=$2500.00.  Not even a start, this just maintains us.

3. Tell your nieghbor about the trouble and send us his e=mail and home address.  We have to get in contact with the property owners that are not members.

4.  LEARN TO ID THE MILFIOL. We are looking for voluteers to be spotters in all areas of the lake.  We need you now.  If you are on the water much of the time you can be very important to this lake.

Milfoil fund Raffle- Make some comments

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Good news, all the raffle tickets have been sold except one.  The one that we saved will be raffled off at the Oct. 11 meeting  before the winnig ticket is drawn.  Be sure to come and get another chance to win the big prize.  This is sure to be a very exciting meeting.  We want to thank those that have bought tickets and those that have given donations above and beyond the ticket buying.  We are still going to need to keep raising moneys to meet our goal.  Please talk this problem of the milfoil up to you neighbors and help us get the word out.  The this is a problem that belongs to ALL of the proberty owners not just a few.

I just realized that you don’t understand that you can make comments on this site and make it a converstion.  All you have to do is hit comment under the topic and type away or go to the comment section.  We will post it as soon as we can.   All the information is filed under the relating section on the right.  The comments that pop up first are the most recent thing posted.  It is not static.  Lets get some conversation going on the treatment of the milfoil.  We need your input.  DO YOU WANT TO HAVE HAVE THE WEEDS POISONED IN FRONT OF YOUR DOCK?   THIS SHOULD START SOME COMMENTS.  Do you want to have this put on your taxes?  LET’S WAIT AND SEE AND THEN HAVE A HARVESTER COME IN EVERY YEAR AND CUT THE WEEDS.  Does that stir you up?      PLEASE MAKE SOME COMMENTS.   Let’s talk.

Michigan’s First Case of Chronic Wasting Disease Detected

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

This was sent to me by http://www.michigan-sportsman.com .  If you’re not familiar with this site, check it out.  It’s a great resource.

In case you have not heard the new today, we posted an alert sent to us by Mary Dettloff a public information officer of the DNR.    The full note and discussion can be found at http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/showthread.php?t=248252

In a nutshell, due to the discovery of CWD in a deer, a baiting ban was automatically placed into effect immediately for the entire LP.    Please feel free to come in and join in the discussion on how this whole issue will affect the future of deer hunting in MI.   While we don’t like to send out these alerts too often we felt it was needed in this case as these regulation changes may not make it into the hunting guide for this year.

CWD has changed the face of deer hunting in Wisconsin where it has previously been discovered and eradication efforts have been under way for some time, see:
